Send In the Clones

Donny Jefferies doesn't like to do things small. As one of the 100 wealthiest men in America he's known for throwing lavish parties at his Dallas home, investing in thoroughbred racehorses and in general being the epitome of a Texas millionaire. And now Jefferies has announced that he is going to clone his dog.

Texas millionaire plans to clone his dog

An anonymous man and wife had already announced in August of 1998 that they were giving Texas A and M University 2.5 million dollars in an effort to clone their dog, Missy. Not to be outdone, Jefferies plans to donate 5 million dollars to Sawyer University, a small college located in Brownsville.

"Sawyer was where I went to school and it was a fine center for higher learning." Jefferies told reporters at a recent news conference. " If anyone can do it then I'm betting Sawyer can."

The initial problem that must be overcome is the fact that Sawyer does not have a agricultural college such as Texas A and M. Another is that the small university is a Christian school founded by Baptist ministers in 1895. No member of the University was present at the news conference, held February 20th at Jefferies offices in downtown Dallas.

When Sawyer President Cole Meartum was contacted he said he had no warning from Jefferies about the plan for Sawyer to clone his dog. "Mr. Jefferies is a fine man and one of our most celebrated alumnus's but I was not fully informed of the donation. He spoke to me briefly on the 15th and said that he wanted to give a contribution toward scientific research. I told him that any gift was most welcomed and we would be happy to use it in any way he would like. Cloning is something I had not anticipated and will have to discuss with the board."

'Bobo' the dog.

The dog in question is named 'Bobo' and is of no specific breed. It was adopted by Jefferies in 1996 after running out into the street and being hit by the limo he was in. "That dog means the world to me," Jefferies stated, "The vets say it's over 10 years old and it's not going to be with me for very long. I plan on fixing that."

Jefferies immediate plans toward the cloning project are indeterminate. "I'm giving Sawyer a huge hunk of change and letting them get started. I'll stay out of the way." When asked if he was doing this because of publicity Jefferies replied; "Heck no, I just love my dog. If some other millionaire loves his dog too, then thats fine. Maybe I just love my dog more."

This is not the first time Jefferies has announced he was 'one-upping' another person. In 1991 he told reporters that he was planning on running for President just 2 weeks after Ross Perot announced the same intentions. Jefferies allegedly spent two hundred thousand dollars on printed advertising before announcing that he was 'just kicking the idea around and have changed my mind.'
