I've been following the trials and tribulations of the recent Witchblade series DVD release. It seems that instead of paying out a huge sum of money to the artists whose music was licensed to be used in the show originally, the producers went back in and chose new music to cover those now missing songs. I understand that the series Roswell had to do the same for their DVD release.
The result for Witchblade has seemed to be largely negative with fans saying that certain original songs were key elements that made certain scenes work. I'll have to agree that music can really make or break a scene at times.
I also remember the producers of Freaks and Geeks had to take a chance and pay out something like a million dollars for music rights so that their original vision of the show could be released intact. A gamble that paid of very well for them.
This all brings us back on topic with FreakyLinks--- I truly wonder what the price tag for the music rights are for this show and if it's a key factor in the delayed DVD release.
Another question I have is, would you be willing to accept alternate yet similar music in a FreakyLinks DVD release or does something like Trailerbride's Graveyard or TSAR's Calling All Destroyers and The Girl Who Wouldn't Die make or break the scene/ feel / moment for you?
Myself, I'd have a very hard time accepting substitutes. Yet another reason I haven't bought the Witchblade DVD set.
I think the thing that burns the most is that the broadcast rights of the original songs is locked in. So if you were to buy the Witchblade series on DVD you'd get the alternate music but then you could go home and turn on your TV and some cable channel is showing the series, you'd get the original music there. Kinda crazy.
Thoughts?

Good point-- I couldn't imagine those scenes in 3:13 without Trailer Bride's "Graveyard" or "You Don't Know What It's like" by Econoline Crush.
I shudder to think what modern replacements would be chosen... some miscellaneous 'club' tunes in place of Tsar's music?

well, how popular is the music? I remember there was some Fear Factory in... was it the first episode? But all the yodeling and such that occupied the show wouldn't be that expensive, would it?
I'm just imagining that the show didn't have that big of a budget while it was on air, so here's hoping...

Aww, man.. I never even thought of this. Cuz the expense is one thing...
...but I'll bet another problem is whether 'the powers that be' would be bothered to make arrangements, etc, to license all the songs again.... We've already seen how little attenion Fox has given to the show.
Even without the songs being super-popular, I imagine it's still a hassle after 8 years, to to track down every song, one band at a time, in order to get approval for each song.
Would anybody at Fox care enough to do the 'leg work'-- or would they more likely just send one e-mail to grab a package deal on a bunch of canned music?
That sucks. Sucks all around.

What still amazes me is Fox Television Networks re-registered the domain name freakylinks.net til 2009. Why are they still keeping the name? That is the mystery!

Why doesn't somone simply form a group like Freakylinks? Besides the man power need, location controversy, and massive amount of money and computer power.. It doesn't seem to hard...
Alright.. Maybe it's a little more daunting that I had previously thought...

Hey Silent Bob, Do you mean why doesn't someone just go around checking out stories and trying to run reports on them?

I agree. Does ANYBODY know what the status is on the dvd release? I've seen it on Amazon.com, but it's listed under 'currently unavailable' without ANY explanation. Mondo Strange, should we keep sending out more letters / petitions? I'm so confused.... Thank God Chiller tv's, AT LEAST giving the show some airtime. My mother, a cancer survivor, watched this show after her treatments when it first aired on Chiller, and we both fell in love with the show. She and I have been watching it everytime it's scheduled. I sincerely hope that if Chiller continues to air FreakyLinks, that FOX will FINALLY release the show...
